Davidson Surface/Air, Inc., a national logistics services provider to the aviation industry, has begun a new 107,500-square-foot office/warehouse on a 6.33-acre site at 11990 Missouri Bottom Road in Hazelwood, Mo. Edwardsville, Ill.-based design-builder Contegra Construction Co. is handling the project, which carries an estimated completion value of more than $5 million.
Davidson currently operates out of four buildings (one owned, three leased) in the 2500 block of

. “Our goal is to consolidate operations under one roof and to gain the operational efficiencies that can be obtained from a new facility engineered to address specific needs,” said Junsei Ito, principal and controller for Davidson. “While we are not increasing square footage to any great extent, we are positioning ourselves for growth by investing in a high-tech, high-cube building.”
Founded by Donald E. Davidson in 1981, Davidson Surface/Air began as a local courier service. It expanded and diversified over the years, ultimately entering the logistics business in 1994 when it acquired its first warehouse. It has subsequently grown to become a door-to-door logistics services provider specializing in expedited deliveries. The company currently employs approximately 40 people.
Scheduled for completion in early 2005, Davidson’s new building will have approximately 8,000 square feet of office space, including a dispatching office and driver’s lounge. The warehouse will have 36-foot clear height ceilings, eight dock doors and be outfitted with a super-efficient very narrow aisle (VNA) wire-guided storage system linked with computer controlled, bar code inventory tracking technology.
Parking will be provided for 47 vehicles and 37 trailers. There will also be a concrete truck court.
Contegra won the project following a spirited competition. “We were looking for an experienced tilt-up contractor who would give us personal service,” said Ito. “After interviewing five, we selected Contegra. We have not been disappointed.”
Sansone Group represented Davidson Surface/Air in the real estate transaction.
Joining Contegra on the project are: Mitchell-Hugeback Associates, architect and interior designer; Stock and Associates Consulting Engineers, Inc., civil engineer; and McNealy Bumberry, structural engineer,
